Review: Ormonde Jayne Ta'if
I can't quite make up my mind about Ta'if. Sometimes I spray it on and get a rich, unique desert rose, while others it seems watery and insipid. When it is good, it is very, very good, but when it is bad, it is horrid. This is all spraying from the same bottle, under a variety of atmospheric conditions. I can't make out any rhyme or reason to its varied performance, but the deliciousness created when it comes out aright makes me keep trying. At its best, Ta'if has a light rose base touched with dry, dusty notes evocative of the desert. Underscoring the desert scene is a sweet, smooth, earthy note that is meant to bring to mind date fruits. I'd say it does so admirably. The drydown becomes less sweet and rosier for me, and generally lasts 5-6 hours. That's the good - when the wearing goes awry, I get a very weak, sweet rose that dissipates within an hour. It's a puzzle that I've no hope of solving, but I must say it does lend some excitement every time I choose to wear Ta'if: will I get the good or evil twin this time???
